NPA Vancouver announces John Coupar and Sarah Kirby-Yung as candidates for the upcoming municipal election

July 24, 2018, Vancouver, B.C. – NPA Vancouver officially announced today that two-term Park Board Commissioner John Coupar will be seeking re-election to the Park Board and that Park Board Commissioner Sarah Kirby-Yung will be seeking a seat on Vancouver City Council. Both served as Chairs of the Park Board and were recently approved to run as NPA candidates by the NPA Vancouver Board of Directors.

Coupar and Kirby-Yung join NPA incumbent candidates Melissa De Genova (Council), Casey Crawford (Park Board), Fraser Ballantyne (School Board), and Lisa Dominato (School Board), who were all previously acclaimed. NPA City Councillor George Affleck announced earlier this year that he would not be seeking re-election, while NPA City Councillor Elizabeth Ball has yet to decide what her future plans are.

Over the last few weeks Coupar, Kirby-Yung, and the incumbent candidates have been attending events with Mayoral Candidate Ken Sim. Sim says, “I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know our candidates and I’m thrilled at the experience and intelligence the team continues to share with me and each other on a variety of issues impacting our city and its residents. Our NPA team is continuing to meet with groups and individuals across Vancouver to understand what matters most to the people living and working here. We are focused on improving the liveability of this city and this starts with the strength of our NPA team.”

In terms of additional candidates for the NPA slate, NPA President Gregory Baker says the NPA’s incumbent candidates will soon be joined by several new candidates who are currently going through the candidate selection process.

“We hope to have our slate of candidates in place no later than August 15,” said Baker. “We’re excited by the incredible interest we’ve received from a wide range of great people. In January we set out to improve diversity in our candidate selection by reaching out to a wider group of Vancouver residents to find the best people to represent our city and a new, revitalized NPA.”

The NPA recently set a deadline of Friday, July 20th at 5:00 PM for potential candidates to submit their application packages. The NPA’s Candidate Screening Committee is expected to complete its work by July 30, 2018, followed by a review of potential candidates by the Nominations Committee, with a report to the NPA Board on or before August 10. An announcement on the official candidates will be made in mid-August.
